Barbados Tridents remained at the bottom of the Republic Bank CPL table following a 35-run defeat by Trinbago Knight Riders at Kensington Oval on Saturday night.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Tridents and further dented their chances of making the playoffs.
After being sent in to bat, TKR struggled to get the ball away in the powerplay thanks to some excellent bowling from the Tridents, as they struggled to 28 for 1.
Batting at number three, captain Nicholas Pooran injected some impetus to the run rate, as he eventually top-scored with 59 off 37 deliveries, including 7 sixes and 2 fours, while opener Colin Munroe added 38 from 32 deliveries.
The Knight Riders were eventually restricted to 147 for 6, as Gudakesh Motie took 3 for 29 for the Tridents, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman grabbed 2 for 22.
In their turn at the wicket, what fans believed should have been a routine run chase for the Tridents got off to the worst possible start, thanks to player of the match, Sunil Narine.
He took three wickets in the powerplay, including removing Quinton de Kock and Rivaldo Clarke without either batsman scoring, as the Tridents crashed to 35 for 4 at the end of the six over period.
Narine went on to take 4 wickets for 12 runs, Jyd Goolie 3 for 20 and Lahiru Kumara 2 for 30, as the Tridents slid to 112 all out with nine balls remaining in their innings.
Opener Zachary Carter and Sherfance Rutherford hit a joint top score of 21 for the Tridents, who continue to struggle with the bat in this year’s tournament.
Speaking following the game, Tridents skipper Chris Green says his team bowled very well but struggled in tricky batting conditions when faced with a quality Knight Riders blowing attack.
He also thanked the fans who attended the game and was hopeful of a better performance from his side on Sunday, September 6.
“Look, thank you for coming out tonight – the atmosphere was amazing. We’re gutted with our performance, but we have to dust ourselves off and come back. We’ll try to put in a better performance, because we definitely need to.”
