Dominica mourns Marcella André, distinguished communicator and daughter of the soil

    Marcella André

Dominica and the wider Caribbean media fraternity are mourning the death of veteran broadcaster, communications specialist, entrepreneur and mentor Marcella André.

André, a daughter of Dominica who built an influential career in Antigua and Barbuda, is being remembered for her commanding voice, outstanding communication skills and commitment to helping others realise their potential.

Her passing is a profound loss for both countries she called home and for the wider regional media and communications industry.

Born in Dominica, André’s early life was dramatically altered by Hurricane David, which devastated the island in 1979. She was just five years old when the catastrophic storm displaced her and resulted in her being sent to Antigua.

What may initially have been considered a temporary move became a defining chapter of her life. André grew up in Antigua, but her connection to Dominica remained deeply rooted in her identity and personal story.

She would later speak candidly about the emotional impact of being uprooted from her birthplace and attempting to find her place between two countries, two families and two identities.

In her powerful TEDxAntigua presentation, Displacement Breeds Discovery, André recounted how Hurricane David changed the course of her childhood. She reflected on the loss, uncertainty and confusion that followed the disaster, as well as the resilience that eventually allowed her to find meaning and purpose in her journey.

Her story resonated strongly with Caribbean people familiar with the realities of migration, separation and rebuilding after natural disasters.

“Looking back at the seemingly disjointed parts of my story allows me to create positive meaning,” André said during the presentation.

Despite establishing much of her life and career in Antigua and Barbuda, André’s professional journey reportedly included service at the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation during the 1990s.

She later became one of the most recognisable voices in Antigua and Barbuda’s media landscape, spending more than 15 years working as a broadcaster, media personality and producer.

André was particularly associated with the Observer Media Group and Observer Radio, where her distinctive voice, confidence, intellect and ability to connect with audiences earned her respect throughout the industry.

Her work placed her among the professionals who contributed to a transformative period in private broadcasting in Antigua and Barbuda.

She worked closely with the late Observer Media Group founder Winston Derrick and, following his death, wrote movingly about the impact of the media pioneer, whom she regarded as both an employer and friend.

Her contribution extended far beyond the newsroom and broadcasting studio.

André founded NIA Comms, a communications consultancy guided by the principle “Purpose plus Excellence.” Through the company, she provided public relations, marketing, communication strategy, event management, social-media support, professional training and capacity-building services.

Her work reached clients in Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, the wider Caribbean and internationally.

André’s professional mission was centred on helping businesses and individuals communicate more effectively. She delivered workshops and presentations in public speaking, customer service, professionalism, personal development and media engagement.

She was also a highly regarded master of ceremonies, moderator and motivational speaker who hosted numerous governmental, corporate, cultural and educational events in Antigua and Barbuda and further afield.

Her powerful voice and commanding stage presence made her a natural choice for major occasions. She could be warm and humorous while maintaining the authority and professionalism required to guide an event successfully.

André was also deeply committed to the advancement of women and young people.

In 2020, she collaborated with communications specialist Jamilla Kirwan to establish the NIA Mentor Award. The initiative provided financial assistance and a year of mentorship to a female entrepreneur in Antigua and Barbuda.

The programme awarded EC$7,000 to its recipient and provided access to seven accomplished women who offered business and professional guidance.

The initiative demonstrated André’s belief that empowerment required more than inspirational words. It required practical assistance, mentorship and the creation of opportunities.

She was equally passionate about culture and the performing arts, contributing as both an organizer and performer. André also served as Antigua and Barbuda’s country director for an initiative involving the Caribbean Performing Arts Federation.

While Antigua and Barbuda became the principal base for her professional life, Dominica remained an inseparable part of her identity.

She regularly drew upon her experience as a Dominican child displaced by Hurricane David to encourage others to turn painful or uncertain circumstances into opportunities for growth.

That message became one of the defining themes of her life: displacement did not have to mean defeat.

André transformed her experience of loss and relocation into a platform for communication, leadership and service. She became an example of the significant contributions Dominicans living abroad continue to make throughout the Caribbean.

She belonged fully to Antigua and Barbuda’s professional and cultural community, but she also remained a proud product of the Nature Isle. Her life formed a bridge between the two countries and reflected the close familial, historical and cultural relationships that unite the people of the Eastern Caribbean.

Those who encountered André through broadcasting, business, training or public events will remember her unmistakable voice, bold personality and commitment to excellence.

She was articulate, fearless and direct. She was also generous with her experience and took particular interest in helping emerging entrepreneurs and communications professionals develop their confidence.

For Dominica, her passing means the loss of an accomplished daughter of the soil whose influence extended well beyond the shores of her birthplace.

For Antigua and Barbuda, it marks the loss of a leading communications practitioner who contributed significantly to media, business, culture and community development.

For the Caribbean, it is the loss of a regional woman whose story embodied resilience, reinvention and the power of purposeful communication.

Although the voice that informed, motivated and inspired so many has been silenced, Marcella André’s influence will live on through the professionals she trained, the entrepreneurs she mentored and the many lives she touched.

Details surrounding her passing and funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

Heartfelt condolences are extended to André’s family, friends, colleagues and the media and communications communities in Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda and across the Caribbean.

May this distinguished daughter of Dominica rest in eternal peace.
