Minister for Finance Dr. Irving McIntyre says the Government is advancing plans to establish a dedicated National Disability Affairs Unit to better address the needs and concerns of persons living with disabilities in Dominica. McIntyre revisited the initiative, which was outlined in the National Budget, as part of efforts to create a more coordinated approach to disability-related matters.
The Minister explained that, rather than having responsibility for disability affairs spread across different ministries, the proposed unit would provide a central point where persons with disabilities can seek assistance and have their concerns addressed. He said the arrangement is intended to give members of the disability community greater confidence that their issues and complaints will receive focused attention.
McIntyre also stressed that persons living with disabilities are an important part of Dominican society and should be given opportunities to participate fully in the country’s economic development. He said the dedicated unit would not only focus on addressing challenges but also help create an environment in which persons with disabilities can make meaningful contributions to Dominica’s development.
