President of the Dominica Nurses Association, Registered Nurse Joanna Laurent-Blaize, is calling on nurses across Dominica to ensure that patients receive not only professional medical attention but also kindness, dignity and genuine care.
Her appeal extends to healthcare workers serving in hospitals and health centres, where patients may be particularly vulnerable and in need of reassurance.
In a public statement issued on August 26, 2026, Laurent-Blaize encouraged nurses and ward aides to remain compassionate in their interactions with patients, regardless of the circumstances they encounter.
She stressed that the manner in which healthcare workers communicate and respond to patients can have a significant impact on their overall experience and well-being.
Laurent-Blaize also sought to challenge the perception that showing compassion is a sign of weakness. Instead, she described compassion as an expression of strength and an essential quality within the nursing profession. Her message calls on healthcare workers to let empathy, respect and kindness remain central to the care they provide.
