University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, has linked the treatment of late Cambridge University academic Professor Jason Arday to systemic anti-Black racism, arguing that the circumstances surrounding his final weeks raise wider questions about the treatment of Black academics at British universities.
“The public destruction of the living and life of this young, accomplished scholar has resonated globally as a gruesome, networked catastrophe,” the historian and reparations campaigner said in a strongly worded statement following Professor Arday’s death, adding that it could not be separated from the historical and institutional effects of racism.

“It is impossible to separate the loss of Professor Jason Arday’s life from the truth embedded in the resolution. Anti-black racism at its most inhumane and life-destroying intensity has always been implemented by the minds and mostly invisible hands within public institutions.”
Arday, who was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge in 2023, was found unresponsive at his home in Battersea, south London, on August 14 and pronounced dead at the scene.
His death came nine days after he resigned from Jesus College Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism and scrutiny of aspects of his academic record and career. Arday had denied plagiarism and academic misconduct.
An inquest into his death opened on Wednesday and was adjourned for further investigation. Police have said the death is not believed to be suspicious.
Beckles said the circumstances surrounding Professor Arday’s final weeks should prompt universities to examine the institutional and public support available to academics facing intense scrutiny.
“The university cannot easily set aside the tangled web of warfare unleashed upon its member. The gauntlet has befallen Cambridge University today, but it will fall elsewhere tomorrow,” he said.
The UWI vice-chancellor drew a historical parallel with Saint Lucian economist Sir Arthur Lewis, recalling resistance to his appointment as Professor of Economics at the University of Liverpool in 1947.
According to Beckles, Britain had no Black professors at the time and Liverpool did not want to be the first university to appoint one. Lewis subsequently joined the University of Manchester and went on to win the Nobel Prize in Economics.
“The systemic problem remains,” Professor Beckles said.
He argued that many older British universities were still coming to terms with their historical connections to slavery, colonialism and apartheid, and questioned whether academic excellence could be separated from institutional ethics.
“The challenge before us is to answer the question of whether a university can claim excellence with an unethical race ceiling at the core of its collegial culture,” he said.
“Excellence is no longer seen as confined to curriculum, teaching, research ranking, and student satisfaction. It is equally about the ethical values of pedagogy and genuine commitment to the enlightenment of humanity.”
Professor Beckles also argued that Arday had been failed by a lack of institutional and public support.
“The ending of Arday’s life resonates everywhere as evidence of the lack of institutional and public support for a human who deserved a right to public help,” he said.
“This is not a ‘who done it’ mystery. Collective ownership is the place to begin looking for the weapon.”
Arday became the youngest Black person appointed to a professorship at Cambridge when he joined the university in 2023. His appointment attracted international attention.
Professor Beckles, who also chairs the CARICOM Reparations Commission, placed Arday’s experience within a wider historical struggle against colonialism and racism, arguing that his death should force institutions to confront what he described as continuing racial barriers.
