The current turmoil within the People’s National Movement (PNM) can no longer be viewed as a dispute confined to a single constituency. What is unfolding in San Fernando East has exposed deeper questions about leadership, authority, party discipline and the future direction of Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest political organisation.
At the centre of the controversy is a public dispute involving San Fernando East MP Brian Manning and constituency chairman Patricia Alexis. What began as an internal disagreement has evolved into a wider test of the party’s ability to manage conflict and maintain unity.
The most troubling aspect is the apparent inability of the PNM to resolve the matter through its established internal structures. Constituency executives have openly challenged the MP, executive members have resigned, and competing factions have taken their grievances to the media. Such developments inevitably weaken public confidence in the party’s governance and decision-making processes.
The resignations are particularly significant because constituency executives are the foundation of grassroots political activity. They mobilise supporters, organise campaigns and sustain party engagement between elections. A fractured executive raises serious concerns about organisational effectiveness and electoral readiness.
The decision by Hazel Manning to seek the constituency chairmanship has added another dimension to the dispute. As the widow of former prime minister Patrick Manning and the mother of Brian Manning, her candidacy carries significant political symbolism. Supporters may view her involvement as an effort to restore stability and unity, while critics may see it as part of a broader struggle for influence within the party. Either way, the contest now holds significance beyond San Fernando East.
The broader issue, however, concerns the authority of political leader Pennelope Beckles. Having assumed leadership after the PNM’s defeat in the 2025 general election, she inherited the difficult task of rebuilding a party emerging from the long shadow of former prime minister Dr Keith Rowley.
The events in San Fernando East are testing her ability to establish her own authority and define a distinct leadership style. The transition from a party shaped by strong personalities to one guided by strong institutions was always likely to be difficult. Recent events suggest that process remains unfinished.
Party chairman Marvin Gonzales has insisted that no MP, minister, or prime minister is bigger than the PNM and that the situation is under control. Yet, authority cannot simply be asserted. It must be demonstrated through credible processes, decisive action and successful reconciliation. Political leadership is ultimately measured by outcomes.
The implications extend beyond the PNM itself. A healthy democracy requires a strong and effective Opposition capable of scrutinising Government decisions, holding leaders accountable, and presenting a credible alternative vision for the country.
The developments in San Fernando East should therefore be seen as more than a constituency dispute. They are a test of the PNM’s capacity to govern itself, manage internal divisions and rebuild public trust. The question is no longer who controls one constituency. It is whether the party can emerge from this challenge as a stronger, more disciplined, and more credible political force.
