Lloyd Robertson, Unflappable Canadian Broadcaster, Dies at 92

Lloyd Robertson, a long-serving broadcaster and television news anchor whose calm demeanor led fellow Canadians to call him their nation’s Walter Cronkite, died on Aug. 4 at his home in Markham, Ontario, near Toronto. He was 92.

His death was announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, who called Mr. Robertson “a reassuring voice in moments of uncertainty” and a “charismatic and trusted storyteller.”

Mr. Robertson’s 41 years as a national television news anchor easily surpassed the tenures of his American counterparts Mr. Cronkite and Tom Brokaw, as Canadian commentators were fond of pointing out. Like those two anchors, Mr. Robertson imposed himself on the consciousness of his fellow citizens through an unflappable even-handedness that became his trademark.

Night after night, through his epoch’s defining events — the first moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Persian Gulf war, the Sept. 11 attacks and 14 Canadian federal election campaigns — Mr. Robertson’s plain, matter-of-fact delivery rhymed with the national sensibility.

He delivered the news straight up, first for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and then, starting in 1976, for the privately owned CTV Television Network. His 11 p.m. broadcast became the news leader in the 1980s and ’90s, sometimes attracting audiences of more than two million in a nation whose population was then between 20 and 30 million.

Even his neutral signature sign-off — “and that’s the kind of day it’s been” — reflected a down-the-middle approach. “He narrated current events with the calm of a librarian,” the Toronto Star columnist Vinay Menon wrote after Mr. Robertson’s death.

Compared with the public-policy-oriented CBC newscast, Mr. Robertson’s broadcasts — his choice of stories and the weight he gave to each — were more closely attuned to the interests of average Canadians, Christopher Waddell, an emeritus professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication in Ottawa, said in an interview.

“He had a very good sense of what interested people across the country,” Mr. Waddell said. “He was someone that everybody wanted to watch at night. It was an era when people would go to their televisions to see what Lloyd Robertson was presenting that night.”

What colleagues described as a lack of pretension and his modest background — he was the son of a railroad machinist from provincial Ontario — helped generations of Canadians identify with him.

“Most Canadians of my age grew up listening to Lloyd Robertson,” Robert Fife, the Ottawa bureau chief for The Globe and Mail of Toronto, who worked for Mr. Robertson at CTV, said in an interview. “They would tune in to him because he was authoritative and trustworthy.”

On politics, Mr. Fife added, viewers “trusted him because they never got a sense from him of where he stood. He got along well with all the prime ministers.”

Lloyd John Robertson was born in Stratford, Ontario, on Jan. 19, 1934, one of two sons of Lilly (Francis) Robertson and George H. Robertson.

His mother suffered from severe mental illness and had a lobotomy when Lloyd was 14, darkening an already difficult childhood. He was largely raised by half siblings from a previous marriage of his father’s; his father was 60 when Lloyd was born and had been ill for years by the time he died in 1956.

Lloyd began working for a local radio station while he was still in high school, playing records on air and learning the fundamentals of broadcasting. He joined the CBC in 1954, won an audition in Winnipeg to host what he called a “western show” and delivered his first national broadcast on Christmas Day in 1956.

He became a CBC correspondent in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, and by 1962 he was in Toronto, at the “bottom of the pile of announcers,” as he put it in a 2011 documentary about his career. It was “dog shifts all the time,” he said.

By 1970, he was the anchor of the CBC’s flagship news program, “The National.” But strict Canadian union rules prevented him from writing or editing his own programs, limiting him to the role of simply announcing the news.

A meeting in New York with Mr. Cronkite, the venerable CBS anchor, persuaded him that his situation in Toronto was untenable. At the CBC, “I couldn’t write, I couldn’t edit, I could not participate,” he said in the documentary.

In 1976, Mr. Robertson made the jump, unusual in Canadian broadcasting, from the public network to the private CTV, becoming co-anchor of “CTV National News.” He became the network’s senior anchor in 1984. He retired as anchor in 2011, continuing as a special correspondent for the network for several more years.

Mr. Robertson is survived by his wife, Nancy (Barrett) Robertson, whom he married in 1956; four daughters, Nanci Hester, Susan Robertson, Lynda Robertson-Goudy and Lisa Robertson; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

“He had a say in all the stories, and if they didn’t meet his standards, he’d say it,” Mr. Fife recalled. “An amazing man. Everybody in the country knew him. There was no ego about this guy.”

    Susan C. Beachy contributed research.
