Have you ever walked into a room and felt like no one saw you?

Not literally. You are there, standing, present and engaged, but somehow you feel unseen. People talk over you. Your opinions are overlooked in decisions that once depended on your input. The phone does not ring as often, and the familiar ‘we need you’ has quietly become ‘we have got it covered’.

For many women in their 60s and 70s, this can be a painful reality. They describe the experience as becoming invisible, unseen, unheard and, perhaps most painfully, unneeded.

However, according to life coach Nicola Clarke, founder of Chapter 2 Unleashed, there may be another way to understand this transition. “And here’s what surprises them most: it’s not just in their heads. Something does shift in these years,” Clarke said.

Society places enormous emphasis on youth, productivity and being needed. As women grow older, some begin to feel as though they have quietly aged out of all three. That can feel like a loss.

“It can feel like grief. Because in a way, it is. You are grieving a version of yourself that was seen, heard, and needed by everyone around her,” she said. For much of their lives, many women have been defined by what they do for others.

They may have spent decades raising children, supporting partners, building careers, caring for relatives, managing households and contributing to their communities. They were the people others called when there was a problem to solve, a decision to make, or someone who needed help.

Being needed gave their lives purpose and provided a powerful sense of belonging. Then circumstances change. Children become independent. Careers come to an end or take a different direction. Family responsibilities shift. Partners may become less dependent. Friends develop their own routines.

Suddenly, a woman may have more time than she has had in decades. Instead of immediately feeling like freedom, however, that space can feel uncomfortable. Clarke encourages women to see it differently.

“What if being unneeded isn’t the end of your value? What if it’s the beginning of a value that finally belongs to you?,” she said.

The question invites women to examine a deeply ingrained belief: that their worth depends on how useful they are to other people. The contributions they have made are undoubtedly valuable. However, Clarke points out that when self-worth is dependent on another person’s needs, it can become vulnerable when those needs change.

“For decades, so much of your worth was tied to what you did for others. That worth was real. But it was also borrowed. It depended on someone else’s need,” she said.

The transition therefore presents a difficult but potentially liberating question: Who am I when nobody needs anything from me? For some women, answering that question may require rediscovering parts of themselves that were placed on hold.

Perhaps there is a hobby they abandoned, a course they always wanted to take, a business idea they never pursued, or a destination they have always wanted to visit. It may even be as simple as learning to enjoy their own company without feeling guilty. The goal is not to find another group of people who need them, and to discover what they want.

Clarke says she sees this transformation among women she coaches. “At first, they mourn what used to be asked of them, then, slowly, something changes,” she said.

Instead of asking, “Why doesn’t anyone need me anymore?”, they begin asking, “What do I want to give my time to now? Who am I, now that I’m not defined by being useful?”

That shift can become a turning point. Confidence begins to come from within rather than from external validation. A woman can speak because she has something to say, whether or not someone has asked her opinion. She can enter a room because she wants to be there, rather than because someone requires her presence.

She can choose how she spends her time without constantly measuring her decisions against the expectations of others. “She becomes seen and heard by herself first,” Clarke said.

That kind of visibility is powerful because it cannot easily be taken away by retirement, an empty nest, a quieter social calendar, or a phone that does not ring as frequently. Still, acknowledging these feelings is important.

Feeling invisible can be emotionally difficult, and women should not feel ashamed of admitting that the transition is affecting them. Talking with trusted friends, family members, counsellors or professional coaches can help create space to explore these emotions and identify what the next chapter might look like.

Growing older does not mean becoming irrelevant. It can mean having the opportunity to redefine relevance on your own terms. The question may no longer be, “Who needs me? “It may be, “What matters to me now?”

That distinction can open the door to a different kind of confidence, one that is not dependent on being indispensable. So, if you have been feeling unseen, unheard or unneeded lately, consider asking yourself a different question.

What if you are not fading? What if you are simply entering a season where you get to decide who you are beyond the roles you have spent a lifetime fulfilling? Because a woman’s value does not disappear when people stop depending on her in the same way.

“You were never meant to matter only through being needed. You were meant, first, to matter to you,” she said.
