Jamaica’s number one tennis player, Blaise Bicknell, says he is confident of making a strong start when he faces Australia’s Max Purcell in the opening round of the Kingston Open, an ATP Challenger tournament, at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston today.
The match, scheduled for 4 p.m., will make Bicknell the first Jamaican player to take the court in the inaugural event.
Bicknell, ranked 373rd in the world, will meet a seasoned opponent in Purcell, a former world number 40 and two‑time Grand Slam doubles champion. However, he believes his match fitness and the energy of the home crowd could tilt the contest in his favour.
“He is a very good player because, like two years ago, he was ranked as high as number 40 in the world,” Bicknell said. “But he hasn’t competed in a year and a half and he is just coming back, and so this is his third tournament back.”
Purcell won the 2022 Wimbledon doubles title with fellow Australian Matthew Ebden and the 2024 US Open doubles crown with Jordan Thompson. He reached his career‑high singles ranking of number 40 in October 2023. In 2025, he received an 18‑month suspension, ending June 11, 2026, for violating anti‑doping rules.
Bicknell said he is backing his preparation and competitive edge heading into today’s encounter.
“He has won two Grand Slam tournaments in doubles and so I know he is a very good player, but I am confident that I am match‑fit and I can use my competitiveness to my advantage,” he said.
“I will have my home crowd behind me, and so I am confident that I can get the win. I am feeling good because I have been putting in a lot of work with my team,” Bicknell stated.
He added that executing his game plan from the first point will be crucial if he is to upset the experienced Australian.
“I have to stay within myself and stick to my game plan, and play within my strengths and exploit his weaknesses from the start,” Bicknell said. “I have to come out firing and use the momentum and home crowd to get myself pumped up and hopefully get the win.”
Bicknell also praised the tournament organisers for staging a high‑level event in Jamaica, noting its value for local players.
“The tournament organiser, Stephen Wilson, and his team have done an amazing job to bring this tournament to Jamaica, and so it is really a good chance for us to showcase our talents here,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s other competitor, John Chin, will begin his campaign in the main draw on Tuesday. Chin, who is based in the United States, was initially slated to play in qualifying but was later elevated to the main draw.
