The UDP locked in its mayoral candidates to carry the United Democratic Party’s banner into the 2027 municipal elections in Dangriga and Benque Viejo del Carmen over the weekend.
Dwayne Sampson secured the UDP’s mayoral nomination in Dangriga and defeated Christalyn Castillo in Sunday’s convention by 687 votes to 195. Turnout stood at 886. This makes it Sampson’s third run for office and his first under the UDP banner, after two previous campaigns as an independent.
“I’ve been a community servant for almost two decades, so the support is good,” Sampson told News 5.
He is promising to continue pushing cultural tourism in Dangriga and launching what he called “clinic days” so his councillors hold regular meetings with the residents to hear out concerns.
Meanwhile, in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Yusuf Guerra won the UDP’s mayoral nomination over Danette Mendez, with a vote turnout of 405 votes to 119, respectively. Mendez will stay on Guerra’s slate, filling the sixth and final councillor spot for the party’s 2027 municipal run.
Both Sampson and Guerra now lead their respective UDP slates into the 2027 Municipal Elections.
