Beyond the World Cup shadow: The country that doesn’t play football yet

Shillong, Aug 8: While football continues to captivate millions across the globe, one tiny Pacific island nation remains largely untouched by the world’s most popular sport.
On the island of Nauru, where Australian rules football dominates the sporting landscape, a small group of volunteers is attempting to write a remarkable new chapter—building the country’s first-ever senior international football team.
With a population of around 12,000 and covering just 21 square kilometres, Nauru is widely regarded as the last nation in the world yet to field a recognised senior international football team. The island has only one hard-sand football pitch, and organised football remains almost non-existent despite residents following major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the English Premier League.
Children proudly wear jerseys of stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but opportunities to actually play the sport are rare.
The ambitious project is being spearheaded by British football coach Charlie Pomroy, who serves as the technical director of the Nauru Soccer Federation.
His vision extends far beyond assembling a team for a single international fixture.
Instead, Pomroy and his fellow volunteers are focused on creating a sustainable football culture by introducing the sport in schools, training local coaches and providing equipment for young players.
Their long-term objective is to nurture an entire generation capable of representing the island on the international stage.
One of the first initiatives involves distributing footballs to every child aged between four and 14 across the island.
Around 2,000 footballs will be delivered in batches through partnerships with schools and churches, laying the foundations for regular participation in the sport.
The task, however, is far from straightforward.
Nauru’s landscape bears the scars of decades of phosphate mining, which transformed what was once one of the world’s wealthiest nations per capita into a country heavily dependent on foreign aid. Vast stretches of land have become uninhabitable, leaving limited space for sporting facilities, while more than 90 per cent of the country’s food is imported. The nation also faces significant public health challenges, including one of the world’s highest obesity rates and widespread diabetes.
Finding suitable grounds for football is among the biggest obstacles. Much of the land is either privately owned or unsuitable for development, prompting volunteers to explore the possibility of converting family-owned land into additional pitches. Indoor facilities are also being considered as an alternative.
Pomroy believes football can become a powerful tool for improving both physical health and community life.
Rather than simply teaching the game, he hopes football will encourage teamwork, discipline, healthier lifestyles and stronger social bonds among young people. He envisions a future where today’s children grow into the country’s first generation of international footballers.
The project also faces practical challenges, including limited funding, unreliable internet connectivity and the logistical difficulties of coordinating volunteers across multiple countries. Previous attempts to establish football in Nauru centred on isolated exhibition matches, but the current initiative has shifted its focus towards long-term development rather than short-term publicity.
Although football remains a novelty for many islanders, optimism is growing. The Nauru Soccer Federation has launched fundraising campaigns, created an official website and continues to promote its vision of one day seeing the country’s flag represented in international football.
For now, that dream remains some distance away. But if the current programme succeeds, the world’s final football frontier may soon have a national team to call its own. (Agencies)
