Several generations of Barbadian and West Indian cricketing excellence will gather on Monday, 27 July, for From the Crease, a special evening of stories and heartfelt tributes celebrating the life and legacy of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, National Hero.
Beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Cricket Legends of Barbados, Herbert House, Fontabelle, the event will be hosted by veteran broadcaster Barry Wilkinson. The intimate venue, opposite Kensington Oval, offers a fitting setting in which to remember a man whose name and achievements are forever woven into the history of the iconic ground.
From the Crease forms part of Barbados’ “Standing Ovation” for Sir Garry and the national programme of observances surrounding his State Funeral and National Service of Thanksgiving. The National Organising Committee is bringing the cricketing family together to share the personal memories behind the public greatness.
Sir Garfield’s passing has prompted an extraordinary outpouring of love, pride and reflection from people across Barbados, the Caribbean and the world. Many have wanted to recount the moments, encounters and memories that defined their own connection to him. This gathering will allow the legends of the game to add their voices.
Those attending can expect candid recollections from the field, dressing room and tours. Some will be stories that have become part of cricket folklore. Others will be personal, unfiltered memories that have rarely, if ever, been shared publicly, revealing more of the warmth, humour and humanity behind the extraordinary cricketer and national icon.
Confirmed participants include Wayne Daniel, Vasbert Drakes, The Most Honourable Joel Garner, Sir Gordon Greenidge, Sir Charles Griffith, Dale Richards, Philo Wallace, Tino Best, Dwayne Smith and Fidel Edwards. Sir Wes Hall also hopes to join the gathering.
