Desperate flirtations from French officials after Le Cornu’s visit to Morocco

    French Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu

The visit that led the French Prime Minister, Sébastien Le Cornu, to the Kingdom of Morocco, emerged as an improvised French position that observers linked to the state visit that led President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Germany, which cast a shadow on the relations between Algeria and France, which are still suffering from the inability to overcome political and diplomatic crises that are likely to continue, due to French provocations, according to the point of view of the Algerian party.
The visit of the French Prime Minister to Morocco was not announced until less than one week before the date of the visit, and what is noteworthy is that it coincided with the same date on which President Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited Germany (July 15 and 16, 2026), which excludes the hypothesis of coincidence from this coincidence, noting that the Algerian official’s visit was known for many weeks.

Macron chose the path of Morocco, and Algeria has decided its decision

It seems that the French party was keen to keep followers in its country busy with Le Corno’s visit to Morocco, so as not to leave the impression that France is losing its vital positions in the North African region and its largest partner, Algeria, in favor of European countries stronger than France, such as Germany, and before that Italy, and even Spain, which knew how to overcome its crisis with Algeria, will be visited by its Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, next Monday, in a stop that has more than one significance.
The exchange of visits between Algerian officials and their European counterparts comes at a time when Algerian-French relations are witnessing a state of tension after what appeared on the horizon weeks ago, signs indicating the imminent turning of the page. However, it has become clear that there are those obstructing this trend within the decision-making wheels of the French state, through incitement to thwart this rapprochement. Last week, the French judiciary refused to release the Algerian consular employee, who is imprisoned in France outside diplomatic norms. A decision that was taken by the former Minister of the Interior, who is considered one of the most prominent faces driven by the arms of the deep state in Paris.
Although the French Prime Minister did not dare during the visit to delve into the Sahrawi issue, unusually, this contradicted the desire of the Moroccan authorities, who used to implicate their guests in delving into this issue before they twisted their statements in a way that served Rabat’s agendas, hoping to avoid a new escalation by the Algerian side, but that was no longer useful after bilateral relations reached the brink of rupture.
What has been observed over the past two days is that more than one French official has come out trying to win Algeria’s favor with statements that were mostly friendly in nature, starting with the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nonnaise, who was present at the centenary celebration of the establishment of the Grand Mosque of Paris, and from there he strongly defended the role of the mosque and the Muslim community, an occasion that was also attended by right-wing figures, such as the leaders of the “Republicans” party headed by Bruno Rotayo, Valéry Pécrasse, and Jean-François Coupé.
The French ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatti, also made flirtatious statements to the Algerians in an exclusive interview with Le Figaro newspaper, in which he stated that the number of visas granted to Algeria had been raised to 250,000 visas, in statements that did not fall outside the circle of attempts to reduce tension with Algeria, but without concrete steps, which is what many French positions have embodied until recently.
By monitoring the positions and statements of French officials, it is clear that the French authorities seem confused about how to manage the crisis with Algeria. They sent the French Prime Minister, Sebastien Le Cornu, to Rabat in order to give reassurances to the Moroccan regime that its interests are preserved, and in return it is trying to build bridges of friendship with Algeria, in a scene that seems useless, because the French president has proven his failure in establishing balanced relations with Algeria and the Moroccan regime, since the end of July 2024, and according to observers in Algeria, it chose the path of the Moroccan regime and must bear the consequences of that.
