A Andorrathe population under 15 only represents 10.6% of the total population. According to data fromStatisticsin June of this year there were 89,752 people resident in the country, of which only 9,558 were in the age range that goes from zero to 14 years, that is, in the child population group. It is, by far, the lower percentage if we compare it with that of any of the member states of the European Union (EU).
The twenty-seven member states have a total of 451.1 million inhabitants, of which 62.1 million are under the age of 15, according to data from the World Bank. This figure represents 13.8% of the population, that is, three percentage points more than in principality. The world average of the ratio of the child population to the total inhabitants of the planet is 24%. At the top we find countries like the Central African Republic (49%) i Somalia (47%), among others.
The country with the youngest population in the European Union is Ireland
The lowest values correspond to the countries of the Mediterranean basin. A Spain, Portugal, Greece and Malta the percentage of the child population on the total population is 13%. The minimum within the European Union12%, is recorded in Italyone of the countries in the union where the general trend of population aging and low fertility is more accentuated.
On the contrary, Ireland it is the state with the youngest population, since those under 15 represent 18% of the inhabitants. They also stand out swedenwith 17%, and countries like France, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovakia and Cyprus, all with 16%. Right after, in an intermediate situation, are the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the Czech Republicwhile Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Finland, Hungary and Polandwith a ratio of 14%, are within the European average.
The bulk of the immigration that arrives in Andorra does not have children either
Less and less
If we segment the population from zero to 14 years into three five-year age groups – that is, from zero to four years, from five to nine, and from ten to 14–, we realize that the trend is downward. Thus, according to the latest available data, from 2025, there were 3,995 people registered in the third subgroup; in the second, 3,261, and, in the first, 2,333.
What explains the Andorran demographic particularity? To begin with, low fertility, with a rate of 0.84 children per woman, far from what demographers consider the minimum to guarantee replacement (2.1 for developed countries). At the same time, the resident population between 25 and 34 years old has increased 32.3% between 2020 and 2025, while the from zero to 14 years has been reduced 7.2%. The country is growing thanks to the migratory flows of young adults of working age, but this population group also does not have children once it reaches Andorra. Factors such as the difficulty of reconciling work and personal life, the high age of emancipation and the problem of access to housing, among others, make it difficult to form families.
Ultimately, Europe continues to age, however Andorra it does it more intensely. The reduction in the weight of the child population conditions the planning of public services. A society with fewer children today will have fewer young people joining the labor market in the future. One of the consequences that this fact will have, if the trend continues, is that Andorra it will be even more dependent on immigration to fill jobs.
