The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) says it is looking into reports of “light tremors” and rumbling sounds in the Gallion community and is working with the relevant scientific and technical agencies to find out what is behind the activity.
According to a press release from the ODM, investigations are already underway, and the agency is keeping a close watch on the situation.
In the meantime, the ODM is asking residents to remain calm and to get their information from official sources. It is also encouraging the public not to share unverified reports or speculation while the investigations continue.
The agency said it will keep the public informed and will provide updates as soon as any significant developments have been confirmed.
Gallion sits on a volcanic crater overlooking the southern communities of Scotts Head and Soufriere, two of Dominica’s main fishing villages.
Dominica is home to nine volcanoes, seven of them located in the south of the island, making regular monitoring of volcanic and seismic activity an important part of the country’s disaster preparedness efforts.
