A new regional publication aimed at increasing opportunities for Caribbean student-athletes while promoting the region as a destination for sports, education and sports tourism is set to launch on July 31, 2026.

Student Athlete Focus Magazine – OECS Edition, Issue #1, published by Visit Nature, is being introduced as more than a traditional sports magazine. According to the publishers, it is intended to serve as a regional platform that connects talented student-athletes with educational, athletic and career opportunities at both the regional and international levels.

The inaugural issue,  featuring  Dominican javelin athlete Addison James   is built around the theme, “Creating Pathways—Connecting OECS Student-Athletes to Regional and Global Opportunities.” The publication is based on the idea that while the Caribbean has no shortage of athletic talent, greater efforts are needed to create pathways that help young athletes access scholarships, higher education and professional opportunities.

Rather than focusing solely on sporting achievements, the magazine follows the broader journey of student-athletes—from their early involvement in sports through academic development, university recruitment, international competition, leadership and career advancement.

The publication also explores the roles played by families, coaches, schools, recruiters and educational institutions in athlete development. Additional content examines student wellness, academic preparation, sports tourism, regional collaboration and the economic opportunities linked to sports.

The publishers say that Student Athlete Focus Magazine has been developed with the goal of becoming the Caribbean’s leading media platform dedicated to student-athletes while also contributing to regional development,  to help bridge the gap between athletic talent and opportunity.

Its objectives include increasing scholarship opportunities for Caribbean athletes, strengthening connections with colleges, universities and recruiters, promoting academic success alongside athletic performance, highlighting successful athlete development programmes, encouraging greater regional cooperation in sports and showcasing the Caribbean as a destination for sporting events, training camps and investment.

“Our athletes have always had the talent. What has been missing is a platform that consistently connects their stories, achievements and potential with the people who can create opportunities. Student Athlete Focus Magazine was created to become that bridge.”

To maximise its reach, the publication will be distributed using both digital and print promotional strategies.

As part of the launch campaign, full-page advertisements featuring QR codes will appear in newspapers throughout the OECS and the wider Caribbean. Readers will be able to scan the codes with their mobile devices to access the magazine’s digital edition immediately, allowing the publication to reach audiences well beyond traditional print circulation.

The magazine will also be promoted internationally through media guides distributed to colleges and universities across the United States. According to the publishers, this will place Caribbean student-athletes before athletic directors, coaches, admissions officers and recruiters while also increasing awareness of the Caribbean as a region.

Beyond highlighting athletes, the publication is expected to serve as a promotional tool for Caribbean sports tourism.

Future editions will feature information on sporting venues, destinations, tournaments, training facilities, accommodations, culture and investment opportunities throughout the region.

The magazine also aims to promote the Caribbean as a host destination for youth football tournaments, basketball championships, cricket festivals, athletics training camps, beach sports, golf events, regattas, road races and marathons.

Beyond highlighting athletes, the publication is also intended to promote the Caribbean as a destination for sports tourism.

Future editions will feature the region’s sporting facilities, tournament venues, training locations, accommodations, culture and investment opportunities, while promoting the Caribbean as a host for youth football tournaments, basketball championships, cricket festivals, athletics training camps, beach sports, golf events, regattas, road races and marathons. The magazine will also spotlight sport fishing tournaments, masters sporting events and university showcases.

According to the publishers, linking athlete development with destination marketing offers a new approach to driving economic growth through sport.

The launch comes as the global sports industry continues to expand, with the sector now valued at more than US$600 billion annually. Sports tourism is among its fastest-growing segments and is projected to exceed US$1 trillion by the mid-2030s, fuelled by international competitions, youth tournaments, training camps, fan travel and destination sporting events.

The publishers believe the Caribbean is well positioned to benefit from this growth, citing the region’s internationally recognised athletes, favourable climate, modern sporting facilities and strong global brand. They say Student Athlete Focus Magazine aims to help tell that story by connecting athlete development with regional promotion.

Issue #1 explores the complete student-athlete journey, covering topics such as family support, wellness, academic preparation, recruitment, sport-specific pathways, institutional challenges, the sports economy, sports tourism, resilience and the next generation of Caribbean talent.

According to Visit Nature, the publication also seeks to bring together athletes, educators, coaches, governments, sporting organisations, universities, tourism stakeholders and the private sector in an effort to strengthen opportunities for student-athletes and support long-term regional development.
