Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing met local officials, community leaders and departmental representatives in Minbu Township, Magway Region, yesterday afternoon, emphasizing the importance of education, agricultural development, infrastructure improvement and environmental conservation as key pillars to regional and national progress.
Addressing the gathering at Minbu Sasana Beikman Hall, the President said Minbu has undergone significant development since the opening of the Ayeyawady River bridge linking the town with Magway, transforming it into an important commercial and administrative centre in the region. He urged local authorities to continue improving urban development so that Minbu could serve as a model township for the district.
The President placed particular emphasis on education, describing it as the foundation of national development and social progress. He noted that Minbu has traditionally been known for its strong educational standards and produced many outstanding performers in this year’s matriculation examination. Stressing that quality education begins at the basic level, he called on teachers and education officials to strengthen classroom instruction and continue promoting compulsory education through the KG+9 system. He also highlighted the importance of reading, saying it broadens knowledge, improves critical thinking and equips young people with the skills needed for future success.
The President said the government is working to improve people’s livelihoods by promoting agriculture and livestock production, while encouraging citizens to acquire both academic and vocational skills so they can become self-reliant. He stressed that regional development depends not only on government investment but also on the active participation of local communities. Highlighting Magway Region’s agricultural potential, he encouraged farmers to expand cotton cultivation and develop value-added industries ranging from cotton processing to textile manufacturing. He also called for greater efforts to increase domestic edible oil production by improving sesame and other oilseed yields, saying higher agricultural productivity would strengthen rural incomes, increase exports and reduce reliance on imported cooking oil. Livestock breeding and modern agricultural practices should also be expanded to support sustainable economic growth, he added.
Community representatives presented several proposals to improve local infrastructure, including flood protection along the Ayeyawady River, upgrading roads, constructing a new hospital building, providing dormitories for vocational students, expanding solar power generation and improving public utilities. The President listened to the requests and instructed relevant authorities to coordinate and take necessary action. He also donated books and publications to residents to enhance reading and education.
The President also urged residents to plant more trees to help mitigate the effects of rising temperatures and climate change, noting that environmental conservation is essential for future generations. He further called for continued efforts to improve healthcare, sports, urban development and public awareness, while encouraging people to work together for the country’s long-term development.
During his visit, the President inspected the upgrading of the Minbu District Sports Ground before visiting Magway University and the Technological University (Magway). At both institutions, he toured academic buildings, research facilities and libraries, received briefings from university officials on infrastructure and educational needs, and gave guidance on future development plans. — MNA/ST
