The minister d‘Foreign Affairs, Imma Torhas ensured that the project to create a special economic zone a Merens-les-Vals remains in an initial phase and that, for the time being, a new land has not yet been identified on which to develop it after the location initially proposed presents limitations. This is what he explained in statements to the Andorran News Agency, while referring to the fact that the location that had been identified at first corresponds to a protected space and that, therefore, it is an area that in principle cannot be built on. This circumstance forces us to look for a new location in order to move forward with the initiative.
“The territory that had initially been identified is a territory that is protected, it is an area that cannot be built on in principle”, indicated the minister, who added that the administrative procedures in France they are “long and cumbersome” and that it will be necessary to find “another area than the one that had been identified”. The manager of Aforeign affairs he has remarked, however, that the project is not stopped due to a lack of political will. As he explained, there is interest both on the part of local French representatives and some private sectors to promote an infrastructure that would allow the economic development of this area of the air next to Andorra.
“There is political will on the part of the local elected officials and also of a certain private sector,” said Tor, who pointed out that the French authorities will be in charge of identifying a possible new location. The minister has admitted that, at present, there is no second proposal on the table beyond the initial location of Merens. “Another piece of land has not yet been identified,” he remarked.
