Many workers in Peru know how much they earn on paper, but few know exactly how much reaches their account each end of the month and why. Knowing that number precisely is the starting point to better manage your personal finances, negotiate with reason and plan your future, he said. Buk Peru.

“The challenge is not to know the formula in the abstract, but to apply it correctly to the particular situation of each worker and their context: the month of the year you are in, your pension system, if you have family responsibilities. Every variable matters”indicates Jimmy Huatuco, Project Manager, Buk Perú.
Gross or net salary?
He gross salary It is the sum of all the income received in the month: the base salary agreed in the contract plus any other remuneration concept that corresponds in that period, such as commissions, overtime, family allowance or mobility. He net salary This is what they actually deposit into your account, once the corresponding legal discounts have been applied.
Buk Perú explained that the legal effects do not apply in the same way to all concepts. Each one has a particular nature that determines whether or not it is subject to discounts, so the correct calculation requires reviewing concept by concept. Between gross and net, if these discounts are not understood, they can cause confusion or even the feeling that “something is wrong” with the receipt.
For 2026, the mandatory discounts that directly affect the employee on the payroll are:
- AFP or ONP: the contribution to the pension system. If you are in AFP, the discount includes the mandatory contribution (10%), the flow commission (varies depending on the AFP) and the insurance premium. If you are in ONP, the discount is fixed: 13% of your gross remuneration.
- Fifth category income: an income tax that applies only if your annual income exceeds 7 UIT (S/37,100 in 2026). It is withheld monthly on a proportional basis.
- Family allowance: It is not a discount, but a benefit. If you have children under 18 years of age, your employer must add the equivalent of 10% of the RMV to your gross salary (S/ 113 in 2026).

Does EsSalud or EPS discount the collaborator?
A fact that often causes confusion: EsSalud represents 9% of your gross remuneration, but it is paid entirely by the employer. It does not appear as a discount on your bill. If your company offers EPS as complementary insurance, the employer assumes 6.75%. This point matters because it is part of the total cost of hiring you, relevant information if you are ever going to negotiate a salary adjustment. According to Huatuco from Buk Perú, understanding the salary breakdown has concrete practical consequences:
- To negotiate: Knowing how much the gross amount you want to achieve is equivalent to the net amount you want to achieve gives you a precise argument with your employer.
- To plan: Knowing your real net worth allows you to build a monthly budget without surprises.
- To project: Some discounts, such as fifth-category rent, vary depending on the month of the year and accumulated income. Anticipating it prevents a higher withholding from “falling” in the last quarter of the year.
“With clear and accessible information, the worker goes from being a passive recipient of his or her ballot to being an active agent of his or her own economy.”added the specialist.
