While police have not yet laid charges in the Raccoon Street gunfire investigation involving three officers, another gun case has already landed an eighteen-year-old Belize City resident behind bars. Police say members of the Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team were patrolling Gill Street when the teenager’s behavior raised suspicion. Officers searched him and allegedly found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith shares more on the arrest.

“Police have formally arrested and charged eighteen-year-old Malachi Vernon of Gill Street, Belize City for the offense of fit firearm without having license and fit ammunition without having license. The arrest follows the execution of a preventative patrol by officers attached to the Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team at around nine thirty a.m. on Gill Street, Belize City on Friday, third July. The arresting officer reported that whilst on operation, he observed Mr. Vernon whose conduct aroused his suspicion and when Mr. Vernon was intercepted and searched him on his person. This led to the discovery of a black nine-millimeter pistol with a magazine containing ten live rounds of nine millimeter ammunition.”
