What the Arab teams’ World Cup performances reveal about football development

The group stage of the FIFA World Cup has delivered a mixed picture for Arab football. Some teams have exceeded expectations, while others have left the tournament early after disappointing performances. Yet rather than judging success or failure solely by results, the tournament provides an opportunity to reflect on the different football development models adopted across the Arab world and what lessons can be drawn from them.
North African teams have generally performed more convincingly than their counterparts from the Gulf and the Levant. Morocco has once again demonstrated remarkable consistency, building on the momentum created during the 2022 World Cup. Egypt has also progressed confidently, while Algeria had made it to the knockout stage for the second time in its history after a 3-3 draw against Austria. The memory of the 1982 match remains vivid among Algerian. Tunisia, however, underperformed, a situation not helped by instability on the technical bench after changing coaches during the tournament.
By contrast, Qatar, Iraq and Jordan struggled defensively, conceding numerous goals and failing to advance. Their performances suggest that future investment should not focus solely on attacking talent but also on strengthening defensive organisation, goalkeeper development and physical profiles. Modern international football increasingly rewards teams capable of defending collectively and remaining compact under pressure.
Egypt, Morocco and Algeria arguably possess the strongest domestic football traditions in the region. Their leagues enjoy passionate fan bases, historic clubs and competitive environments that continue to produce talented players. The Gulf presents a different model. Qatar and Saudi Arabia have invested heavily in professional leagues, world-class infrastructure and internationally renowned foreign players. These investments have undoubtedly raised the commercial profile and technical standards of their competitions. However, the expected transfer of this investment to national team performance has been less straightforward.
While foreign stars enhance league quality and commercial appeal, they may also reduce opportunities for local footballers to accumulate high-level competitive experience, particularly in attacking roles. Investment in a league does not automatically translate into national team success unless player development remains at its centre.
This raises an interesting long-term possibility for Gulf football: greater regional integration. Rather than maintaining several relatively small domestic leagues, a future GCC Super League involving clubs Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman could significantly increase competitiveness while preserving playing opportunities for Gulf talent. Such a competition could create stronger commercial revenues, attract larger audiences and expose local players to higher-quality opposition on a weekly basis.
Another important distinction concerns player recruitment models. Morocco and Algeria have successfully integrated their large diaspora communities, benefiting from players developed within some of Europe’s best academies while maintaining strong emotional ties to their countries of origin. This strategy has expanded their talent pools considerably and strengthened competition for places.
Diaspora recruitment, however, is not a substitute for domestic development. Egypt offered a telling illustration of this balance in the current edition of the World Cup, fielding a squad that combined players operating in attacking positions across Europe with talent developed in the domestic league. Sustainable success ultimately depends on pairing internationally developed players with a healthy pipeline emerging from local academies and home clubs.
Finally, coaching continuity deserves greater attention. Tunisia’s experience illustrates how instability on the technical bench can undermine performance during a major tournament. Successful national teams rarely rely on short-term decisions. Instead, they build coherent football philosophies that extend from youth teams to the senior national side, regardless of who occupies the head coach’s position.
The World Cup reminds us that football success cannot be bought overnight. Infrastructure, foreign stars and financial investment remain important, but they are only individual pieces of a much larger ecosystem. Tactical sophistication, effective domestic leagues, coherent youth pathways, goalkeeper and defensive development, intelligent use of diaspora talent, coaching stability and long-term governance all interact to shape international performance.
