“I just got a call this morning from my mum and my sister telling me that Deon was shot. I got here this morning about five o’clock. His body was lying there by the verandah, no life.”
Deon lived at the home with his mother, grandmother and his only daughter. His mother and grandmother were at the house when the shooting occurred.
“My mom say she hear four shots; last thing she hear him holla for ‘Gran’.”
His family believes he was the victim of a robbery:
“Two big gold chains, his bangle and rings, they gone.”
Pilgrim said his mother became so distraught after the shooting that her blood pressure rose and she had to be taken to hospital.
Describing his nephew as a peaceful, hardworking man, Pilgrim said Deon had worked for some time at a canteen where food was sold on Fridays.
“Deon was a cool guy, no violence or nothing, he work for what he want… he’s a loving person. To my knowledge, you can’t say nothing bad about him.”
