On its 33rd day, protests have started in the capital, demanding, among other things, the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The protestors have first gathered in “Skenderbej” Square to then go to the government building where the speeches are held.
This 33rd protest comes after the clashes with the police forces in front of the Assembly, where the protest took place this Thursday morning, where the number of arrested has reached eight.
Although the incidents started when the majority MPs first entered the Parliament, where they were pelted with eggs by the protesters, the fiercest clashes occurred after the plenary session ended and the MPs were leaving the building.
The Police strategy changed when, at the main entrance of the Parliament, protesters started throwing eggs and water bottles at the vehicle of the Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi. At that moment, the distribution of the crowd with tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons began, in an attempt to bring the situation under control.
The protesters retaliated by pelting the officers with hard objects and stones. Not even a police vehicle was saved, the windows of which were broken during the clashes.
Meanwhile, after the violent incidents, the police started escorting the protesters in flagrante delicto. In total, 23 people were escorted, while there were also injured protesters.
The authorities announced that 9 police officers were injured during the protest and were transported to the Trauma Hospital. The situation was normalized only after the intervention of police forces and the departure of most of the protesters from the area around the Parliament.
