“Alzettestrasse is not just any pedestrian zone, but the heart of Esch – indeed the entire region.” In 1996, Mayor François Schaack used these words to describe the importance of a project that would bring lasting change to the city. At the time, the new pedestrian zone was still controversial, but today it has become an integral part of the cityscape. This Monday marks the 30th anniversary of its official inauguration.
