The parents of the students of the “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj” Gymnasium from Novi Sad announced today that the school recorded a “disaster” during the enrollment of elementary school students, because only two of the planned 11 classes were completely filled.
“Jova’s high school is not the most desirable high school in Novi Sad, but it is the last on the wish list of primary school students, and the school will fill only two of the 11 planned classes this year. This debacle has been confirmed today, through the officially published results of the distribution of students by high school,” they stated in the press release.
They added that, when it comes to the science and mathematics major, the threshold for enrollment this year was the lowest of all Novi Sad high schools, although so far for Jovina needed the most points.
“This year, the threshold is 90.5, while last year it took as many as 97.3 points,” specified the parents.
According to them, it was planned to enroll three classes of 20 students each for the informatics course, but only 14 students chose that course, so two classes of this course will be closed.
They added that the competition also included two classes of special mathematics majors with 20 students each, but instead of 40 students, only 28 students put that major on their wish list.
“Just two years ago, as many as 90 students were interested in the biology-chemistry major, and now only 12 students have been assigned to that department, that is, eight places remain unfilled,” the announcement reads.
They stated that the department for students with special abilities for physics enrolled only eight students, and this department was also supposed to have 20 students.
“The situation is similar for enrollment in bilingual classes – according to the competition, 14 students are planned to enroll for each, but only seven applied for Russian, eight for German, and only four for French. Even for English bilingual, where until now there has always been many times more competition compared to the number of places, only 13 students will enroll now,” the announcement reads.
It is added that the remaining three Novi Sad high schools have filled all the places provided by the competition.
“For more than a year, we have been warning about this dark scenario, visited all the institutions several times, with constant appeals to replace the director Radivoj P. Stojković and thus preserve the oldest Novi Sad high school. Despite the numerous illegal actions of the director, which the parents documented to all institutions, the authorities decided to keep Radivoj P. Stojković in the position of director for purely political reasons,” the statement reads.
The mayor of Novi Sad, Žarko Mićin, the provincial secretary for education, Robert Otot, the minister of education, Dejan Vuk Stanković, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, were identified as the direct culprits for the “failure” of Jova’s high school.
“Of course, we should never forget the black role of the president of the Serbian Progressive Party, Miloš Vučević, who created a lie about a female teacher taking his son out into the yard to pay respects to the victims under the canopy. As the students and teachers did not keep silent about that lie, the government and Radivoje P. Stojković decided to punish Jova’s high school, which is now on the verge of survival, with a series of decisions, such as the displacement of three schools and the dismissal of a large number of teachers,” the parents said.
