VICTORY was sweet for NCD Football Club yesterday when they secured their first win in this year’s Premier Soccer League competition, edging out Wawa FC 3-2 in an exciting Round 8 clash at the PNG Football Association Academy in Lae, Morobe.
The Port Moresby-based side showed resilience to come from behind in the second half, with captain Ritzoki Tamgol scoring the match-winning goal in the 90th minute to secure all three points.
NCD FC made a bright start and were rewarded in the 23rd minute when Foddy Penunu found the back of the net to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Wawa gradually settled into the match and drew level four minutes before halftime through Greg Moses, whose well-taken goal ensured the teams went into the break tied 1-1.
The second half produced more drama as Wawa FC took the lead in the 65th minute. Esron Bruce capitalised on an opportunity to put Wawa ahead 2-1, leaving NCD facing the prospect of another disappointing result. However, NCD FC refused to give up.
Coach’s substitute Bobby Pokana made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring in the 71st minute to restore parity at 2-2 and breathe new life into his side.
With both teams searching for a winner in the closing stages, it was NCD captain Tamgol who rose to the occasion.
He struck in the 90th minute to complete the comeback and seal a memorable 3-2 victory, sparking celebrations among the NCD players and supporters.
The win ends NCD FC’s wait for their first three points of the season and provides a timely confidence boost as the Premier Soccer League enters its second half.
Wawa FC, meanwhile, will be disappointed after surrendering a second-half lead but will look to bounce back in their next outing.
The match followed Lae City Dwellers’ 4-1 victory over Finschhafen Bavarians in the opening Round 8 fixture played earlier at the same venue.
