In a message addressed to the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta, President Ghali expressed, on behalf of the Government and people of the Sahrawi Republic, his deepest sympathy to the family of the late leader, the leadership of FRETILIN, and the people of Timor-Leste.

President Ghali paid tribute to the late Francisco Guterres, describing him as a steadfast advocate for the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination and a prominent figure in Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence.

The Sahrawi President highlighted the late leader’s lifelong dedication to the liberation of his country and his significant contribution to the building and consolidation of the Timorese state. He noted that Guterres’ leadership during the formative years of the Republic helped strengthen democratic institutions, advance social development, and inspire generations of East Timorese citizens.

President Ghali also recalled with appreciation the principled positions taken by the late Timorese statesman in support of just causes, including the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination. He emphasized that Francisco Guterres consistently defended the principles of international justice and solidarity, helping to reinforce the longstanding bonds of friendship between the peoples of Timor-Leste and Western Sahara.

“The Sahrawi people remember with gratitude his unwavering support for our just cause and his commitment to the universal values of freedom, dignity and self-determination,” President Ghali stated.

Concluding his message, President Ghali affirmed that the Sahrawi people share the grief of the people of Timor-Leste over the loss of a distinguished statesman and internationalist whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the pursuit of peace, justice and human rights.
