WASHINGTON, June 22 (Yonhap) — China’s new sanctions on some American firms reaffirm that Chinese suppliers are “unreliable,” a U.S. official said Monday, defending the Pentagon’s procurement restrictions on Chinese companies as helping ensure “secure and reliable” supply chains for the U.S. military.
The official’s comment came hours after Beijing imposed sanctions on 10 U.S. military-linked companies to keep Chinese firms from exporting “dual-use” items to them, and announced a decision to ban Chinese government entities from purchasing goods from 46 American firms.
“DOW’s 1260H procurement restrictions help ensure secure and reliable supply chains for U.S. military forces. Beijing’s response only validates the assessment that Chinese suppliers are unreliable,” the official said in response to Yonhap News Agency’s request for comment, using the abbreviation for the Department of War.
Section 1260H procurement restrictions are the Pentagon’s measures to keep entities linked to the Chinese military out of U.S. defense supply chains. The section of the National Defense Authorization Act requires the Pentagon to publish a list of entities deemed linked to China’s military.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon added Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and other companies to its 1260H list, stepping up efforts to prevent entities linked to the Chinese military from participating in U.S. defense supply chains.
