World Cup 2026 – Special – McGinn gives Scotland a dream start at the World Cup – de Ware Tijd

BOSTON – Scotland has enhanced its return to the Football World Cup with a victory. In the opening match of Group C, national coach Steve Clarke’s team defeated Haiti, which had the best claim to victory in terms of play, 1-0 thanks to a goal by captain John McGinn. The Scots are thus taking an important first step towards the next round.

For Scotland, the match marked a long-awaited return to the global stage. The team played at a World Cup for the first time since 1998, while Haiti also made a historic return. The Caribbean nation had qualified for the final tournament for the first time since 1974.

In an attractive stadium in the Boston area, both countries were supported by thousands of enthusiastic supporters. The Scottish Tartan Army created an exuberant atmosphere, while the large Haitian community in the region also supported its team en masse. For many Haitians, participating in the World Cup was a moment of national pride at a time when the country is facing major social challenges.

Scotland started the match as favorites and took the initiative from the first whistle. With players like Scott McTominay, Andy Robertson and John McGinn, the team had more experience at the highest level. However, Haiti offered fierce resistance and tried to create danger through rapid outbreaks.

The decision came in the first half when McGinn found the net. That goal ultimately proved to be enough for the victory. Despite some chances for Haiti, the Scottish defense held firm and the European team took the three points.

The victory puts Scotland on three points in Group C, which also includes Brazil and Morocco. Previously, these two countries played a draw against each other, which means that after the first round the Scots are doing excellent business in the battle for a place in the knockout phase.

For Haiti, despite the defeat, there remains reason for optimism. The team showed that it was combative and made things difficult for Scotland for a long time. However, the next group match against Brazil will be a tough task for the Caribbean formation. Scotland will face Morocco in their next match in a match that could potentially decide their place in the next round.
