Yap watches as the elderly resident tries out the walker.
KUCHING (June 12): While infrastructure development and public amenities remain essential for community progress, equal attention must be given to the wellbeing of residents, particularly senior citizens, vulnerable groups and those facing hardships, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
Following a recent visit to an 87-year-old resident in his constituency, Yap said community development should not only focus on physical improvements but also ensuring that residents receive the care and support they need to live with dignity and independence.
During the visit, he presented a wheelchair and a walker to assist the elderly resident with her daily mobility needs.
He encouraged members of the public who know of senior citizens or individuals requiring assistance to contact his service centre so that appropriate support can be arranged.
“Our senior citizens have spent a lifetime contributing to our families and community. It is our responsibility to ensure they continue to receive the care, support, and dignity they deserve in their golden years,” he said in a statement.
Yap noted that even modest assistance can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life.
“The provision of a wheelchair and walker may appear modest, but it can greatly enhance mobility, independence, and comfort for those who need it,” he said.
He reiterated his commitment to helping residents who require support through welfare assistance, community programmes and collaboration with relevant government agencies and charitable organisations.
“Caring for our community is not just about development and infrastructure. It is also about looking after the well-being of every resident and ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.
