The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) declared this Monday, June 8, an institutional orange alert due to the approach of Tropical Storm Cristina and other active events that represent threats in the country.
He added that he is maintaining the monitoring of the aforementioned storm in the Pacific Ocean, since, according to information from Insivumeh, the highest rainfall accumulations will be recorded in the regions of the Pacific, the bocacosta, the west, the central highlands and the eastern valleys.
He explained that Tropical Storm Cristina formed in the Pacific Ocean after the evolution of a low pressure system into a tropical depression and, later, into a tropical storm.
Conred added that, given these conditions, prevention and response actions derived from the orange alert continue, for which it made recommendations to national, departmental and municipal authorities.
Among the recommendations are strengthening monitoring of areas susceptible to landslides and flooding; disseminate preventive information about the risks associated with rising river levels, and verify and socialize response plans, evacuation routes and safe areas.
Also coordinate prevention, preparation and response actions with the institutions that make up the Conred System.
In addition, he asked to address the recommendations provided by the departmental delegates of the Conred regarding the possible effects in Guatemala.
The Insivumeh reported that Tropical Storm Cristina is located near the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. Due to its location and circulation, it keeps moisture from entering; However, due to its possible trajectory, it is expected to enter the national territory on Thursday. For this reason, starting this Monday, June 8, the rains will gradually increase from the south to the center of the country, and Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be the days with the highest rainfall.
