The Principality of Monaco and the Kingdom of Bhutan have formally established diplomatic relations, marking the beginning of a new chapter in cooperation between the two nations.
The agreement was signed on Monday, June 8 at the United Nations headquarters in New York by Monaco’s Permanent Representative, Isabelle Picco, and Bhutan’s Permanent Representative, Tenzin Rondel Wangchuk.
The move strengthens Monaco’s international network and creates opportunities for future collaboration with the Himalayan kingdom, a country widely recognised for its environmental leadership and commitment to sustainable development.
Nestled in the Himalayas, Bhutan is renowned for its rich biodiversity and its pioneering approach to environmental protection. The nation is notably recognised as the world’s first carbon-negative country and has built its development strategy around the concept of Gross National Happiness, a model that prioritises human well-being and environmental preservation alongside economic progress.
Following the signing ceremony, representatives from both countries discussed a range of shared priorities, including sustainable tourism, education, environmental protection and sport. These sectors were identified as potential areas for future bilateral cooperation.
The establishment of diplomatic ties reflects the common values shared by Monaco and Bhutan, particularly their commitment to sustainability, quality of life and responsible development.
Both countries also reaffirmed their intention to continue working together within the framework of the United Nations, supporting international efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and address global challenges through multilateral cooperation.
The agreement adds Bhutan to Monaco’s growing network of diplomatic partners and highlights the Principality’s continued engagement on the international stage.
