In view of the ever-increasing AfD poll numbers, the federal government is under great pressure to act and expect expectations – now Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has used an often-quoted sentence from former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for a verbal liberation. “We can do it!” said Merz on Saturday at the CDU state party conference in Linstow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. “We can do this if we all stand together and if we believe in ourselves a little more,” the CDU chairman implored his supporters. He is sure that the difficulties can be overcome and Germany can get back on its feet relatively quickly.
Because of the economic weakness and declining support among the population, the government wants to demonstrate its ability to act until the parliamentary summer break, which begins on July 10th. Merz wants to put together a reform package on the central issues of taxes, the labor market, pensions and reducing bureaucracy. In addition, there are plans for health and care reform that are already in place and are sometimes being heavily criticized. In addition to the coalition leaders, the Chancellor has invited four representatives of the trade unions and employers to the Chancellery next Wednesday. The crucial reform summit of the coalition committee is scheduled to take place on July 1st.
