False Alarm Attacks on TV Republika – Key State Institution Left in the Dark

The Government Centre for Security was not informed about the false alarms in which journalists from TV Republika were affected, including the station’s CEO Tomasz Sakiewicz. The head of the Government Centre for Security admitted this directly to MP Andrzej Śliwka (Law and Justice, PiS).

Journalists from TV Republika have recently been facing attacks involving false reports to emergency services. Police have been intervening at their homes following reports of possible suicides, deceased persons, or planted explosives. Officers even entered Tomasz Sakiewicz’s home (which also houses the newsroom) and handcuffed his assistant. The incident sparked widespread outrage.

MP Andrzej Śliwka (Law and Justice, PiS) asked the Government Centre for Security about the false alarm attacks targeting TV Republika. He has already received a response – surprising in its content.

“The Government Centre for Security was not informed about the nine incidents to which you refer in the above-mentioned correspondence,” Director of the Government Centre for Security Zbigniew Muszyński told the MP. “In the case of incidents bearing the hallmarks of hybrid threats, detecting and prosecuting their perpetrators does not fall within the statutory responsibilities of the Government Centre for Security,” he added.

Since 30 December 2016, in the case of cascading incidents – most often involving multiple reports in a short period about explosive devices placed in at least two locations – the authority responsible for assessing credibility and issuing recommendations regarding the scope of actions to be taken by services and facility administrators, including possible evacuation recommendations, has been the Central Police Investigation Bureau. After assessing the credibility of such a report, the Central Police Investigation Bureau forwards recommendations to services and facility administrators, as well as to the Government Centre for Security, which acts as the National Crisis Management Centre and then passes them on to entities and institutions that previously received such a report.

    – reads the letter received by MP Śliwka.
