The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has condemned the theft of critical electrical wires from the Biche Booster Station, an act of vandalism that has disrupted water supply to several communities in east Trinidad.
According to WASA, unknown individuals stole electrical wiring from the facility, causing a complete power failure and forcing the booster station offline at 6 am today.
As a result, residents in Charuma, Biche, Plumitan and surrounding areas are experiencing low water pressure or interruptions in service.
WASA said the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) was immediately notified and teams from both agencies are working to repair the damaged electrical infrastructure and restore normal operations.
The authority reminded the public that vandalism of public property is a criminal offence. It said Section 25 of the Summary Offences Act and Section 45 of the Malicious Damage Act provide for fines and imprisonment for persons convicted of wilfully damaging public property.
WASA said acts of vandalism undermine its ability to provide reliable water and wastewater services and urged members of the public to report suspicious activity.
Anyone with information can contact WASA’s vandalism hotline at 496-6738.
The authority said it is working with relevant agencies to address the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
