Journalism student Doris Mašić successfully passed all her university exams and it is the right time to honor and reward herself for her success and start planning for a big summer trip.
The last exam is solved, the time without scripts and studying is finally here, as well as that feeling of relief and peace. I am overjoyed because I know that a well-deserved rest and the most valuable moments with loved ones will follow. I close the scripts and notebooks in the drawer, I proudly return the literature to the library and when asked if I need anything else, I look for the title of my favorite summer reading. I am waiting for longer sleeps, breakfasts that are eaten slowly and in peace, without nervousness and stress. On the contrary, I put my brain into a zen state, play my favorite songs from my Deezer playlist and enjoy myself. I’m looking forward to walks, drinking coffee in the sun and making plans for a long warm summer and traveling with friends. Now is the right time to treat myself to a new, long-desired mobile phone and Young tariff for young people from Hrvatski Telekom, with which I will be able to organize everything more easily and who will be my allies in all possible summer situations; from going out and making arrangements, sharing locations and posting on social networks to sending photos, video calls and new summer photo memories. A good mobile device camera is one of the most important features for me, especially in the summer months.
The decision fell on the iPhone 17, for which I diligently saved and separated from my pocket money, and my parents additionally rewarded me with iPhone Air headphones due to excellent grades. Could summer get off to a better start? I can’t describe how happy I am now to scroll longer and watch Instagram reels and YouTube videos, instead of studying Word documents, Studomat, the web and the fax WhatsApp group. I will mostly use it for taking photos and listening to music, buying plane tickets, studying Booking offers, discovering new places or beaches, but also for help in cooking, finding new recipes for food and refreshing drinks.
I use my mobile phone more often for this kind of research after my experience with the Erasmus program in Turkey, which broadened my horizons to unimaginable widths. Since then, I look at everyday life much more gratefully and try to be as present as possible, but when I don’t know something, I pick up my mobile phone and research and get information about what is happening not far from me, but also on the other side of the world. I was three thousand kilometers away from my family and friends, and I was also on an island, so the connection meant a lot to me. The cell phone was the only way to see my parents on a video call or for instant messages to give me a sense of proximity. With that alone, I was able to live the Erasmus experience with joy. As for navigation, if it wasn’t for Google Maps, I wouldn’t have been able to find accommodation on the first day.
As a journalism student, my mobile phone is already a useful tool; for writing notes and ideas, for recording and taking photos. No matter how hard she tried to take notes with a ballpoint pen in a physical planner, her cell phone took over that role. My notes on my cell phone are a “creative mess” of thoughts, ideas, learning pages, links to needed materials, articles, and interviews. Not to mention recordings and photos, I filled my memory with just that. My mobile phone was also my main tool for working on reports and, as such, extremely practical because, instead of spending hours and hours editing at university, I created the content at home, on the go or over coffee, and it was not much different from what was created on a laptop or computer in special programs.
This summer I will also give my new cell phone a break. His biggest “task” will be playing my favorite music. The summer Deezer playlist is full of Spanish and German songs, and in addition I will make long calls that have been waiting in line due to commitments, I will discover new interesting locations and cafes. Of course, taking photos is essential — of the sea, animals, people, loved ones, but also myself — because summer brings a special dose of self-confidence and a period without dark circles due to studying until the wee hours. I enjoy taking photos in the summer. With my camera, I mostly capture shots of the sea, the horizon on trips, sweet macaclins on the sea, but my favorite are spontaneous moments and the smiles of loved ones. It is important for me to “capture the atmosphere” with the camera, not just the shot. I used to be unable to imagine my summer without sending postcards or going to the payphone, and today I cannot do without mobile phones and applications such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, SMS and calls from Hrvatski Telekom.
