The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) declared this Monday, June 9 institutional orange alert due to the effects indirect effects of tropical storm Cristina, which favors the entry of humidity and increased rainfall in Guatemala.
According to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), atmospheric conditions will also cause increased waves and swells on the Pacific coast, as well as the risk of floods, landslides, sudden river flooding and lowering of lahars in volcanic areas.

Rain will increase during the week
According to Insivumeh, Tropical Storm Cristina is moving off the coast of the Central American Pacific and maintains a constant supply of moisture towards Guatemala.
The highest rainfall accumulations could be recorded in the Pacific, Bocacosta, Western, Central Altiplano and Eastern Valleys regions.
Meteorological authorities predict that rainfall will intensify between Wednesday and Thursday, which could generate urban flooding, river overflows, landslides and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Conred also asked coastal communities to remain attentive to the notices issued by the institutions in charge of monitoring.
Risk of lahars in volcanic areas
The rains could favor the descent of lahars in ravines and channels near the Fuego and Santiaguito volcanoes. These flows are composed of water, ash, rocks and volcanic material that flow down slopes and can affect roads, bridges and nearby communities.

The authorities recommended not staying in river beds or in areas identified as vulnerable to the passage of these materials.

The institution indicated that maintains permanent monitoring of meteorological conditions and coordination with departmental and municipal authorities to respond to any emergency that may occur during the passage of tropical storm Cristina.
