Through a statement released on social networks, the union maintained that the Police authority and compliance with the law “must be respected without exceptions” and warned about the “escalation of violence” that crosses the country.
“Police officers cannot continue to be the target of criminal attacks while they carry out their duty,” said the organization, which also claimed “the full support of the authorities” when the troops must repel attacks or threats that put their lives or the lives of third parties at risk.
In the statement, the union also expressed that it does not want “dead cops” neither “Police officers imprisoned for acting legitimately in self-defense or in defense of citizens in situations of extreme violence”.
The union organization also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting police officials who, in compliance with the law, must intervene to protect their integrity or that of other people.
“Society needs police officers supported, protected and respected”stated the union. And he added: “When they attack a police officer, they attack the entire democratic institutions and those who ensure the safety of Uruguayans”.
The attack on the police
A uniformed police officer was shot and robbed this Monday at noon in the Nuevo Ellauri neighborhood, as confirmed by police sources to The Observer.
The incident occurred one block from the intersection of Lieutenant Galeano and San Martín Avenue. The victim, who performs functions in the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR)was on her way to work when she was intercepted by two criminals who were riding a motorcycle.
