Schumann’s Eck, the strategic crossroads between the N15 and N26, is set for a major overhaul, with major works planned to make the intersection smoother and ready for the future.
While the area is not considered particularly accident-prone, with only one recorded crash since 2015, caused in 2021 by a failure to yield and leaving two people with minor injuries, the authorities accept that the current layout will no longer be enough to cope with the rise in traffic expected in the coming years.
With urban and commercial development around the Wiltz area, in particular the growing cluster of businesses in Pommerloch, pressure on the road network keeps building. The Ministry of Mobility has now confirmed that a large-scale project is under way to adapt the junction to future needs and bring lasting improvements in safety.
The project plan, the details of which are still being finalised, calls for a full redesign of the site. The state intends to build a second road bridge alongside the existing one, together with a new roundabout designed to improve traffic flow and visibility. The aim is clear, namely to keep traffic moving more smoothly, reduce the risk of conflicts between road users and prepare the infrastructure for higher volumes.
The project will also weave in a central aspect of contemporary mobility, namely cycling. New connections will be added to the cycle network, providing more direct and safer routes for soft mobility in the region.
If all the administrative permits come through on time, work is set to begin in 2028, marking the start of a major undertaking that will permanently reshape one of the key traffic hubs in the north of the country.
