The president Yamandu Orsi asked Parliament to rescind the request that the Executive Branch had sent days ago requesting authorization to leave the country between June 13 and 18with the aim of attend Uruguay’s debut in the 2026 World Cup in Miami and also to a commercial event in that same city.
This is what was requested through a letter to the president of the General Assembly, vice president Carolina Cosse.
“If you say, now I’m more willing to not go and stay here. The country has a thousand headaches that it has to solve and there are two central laws that have me worried“, he said in relation to the Accountability that must enter Parliament on June 30 and the competitiveness bill promoted by the government.
Last Friday the president had sent the request to leave the country. He had planned to attend the debut on June 15 between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, but then participate on the 17th in a commercial event organized by the Uruguayan Embassy in the United States to promote national products.
That same day, in addition, Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin had declared in a press conference that the president was going to have “very difficult” not going to the 2026 World Cup due to the “very strong pressure” from the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantinothat the leaders of the nations participating in the tournament attend.
Furthermore, the minister had highlighted Orsi’s participation in the Uruguayan product promotion eventwhich was going to give an “extraordinary quality” to the activity.
However, the president decided not to attend either event.
“Today I woke up thinking about it and reconsidering going or not going,” he acknowledged on Saturday in the radio interview.
