The project to rehabilitate and modernize the sports complex of May 8, 1945 in Setif entered its practical phase, after the official start of the works of the first part, today, Saturday, in a long-awaited step by the sports family in the state, in anticipation of the next football season 2026/2027.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has allocated a financial envelope estimated at 30 billion centimes, for the first part of the project, which aims to improve and rehabilitate the various facilities of this ancient sports facility, ensuring better conditions for athletes and fans.
In this context, the Director of Youth and Sports for the state of Setif, Fawaz Maiza, confirmed that the works on the project to restore and improve the facilities of the 8th May Sports Complex were officially launched following the completion of all necessary administrative procedures and the conclusion of the various national championships, which allowed the actual commencement of the implementation of the programmed works pending the determination of the works related to the second part, for which the Ministry allocated another sum of 30 billion centimes, according to the words of “Digias” Setif, stressing that the process is in progress. Its first phase includes renovating the artificial turf for the main field and the annex stadium, in addition to rehabilitating the changing rooms and sanitary facilities and adding new spaces that meet modern standards. The works also include installing new electronic doors and completing additional kiosks for fans to enter, as well as placing new chairs in the stands to improve the comfort of the supporters, highlighting that the main field of the sports complex will, according to him, be ready to host official competitions before the start of the next football season.
The same spokesman pointed out that the sports complex will also benefit from the process of renovating the athletics track and improving the outer wall of the stadium, in addition to including other improvements aimed at modernizing the various facilities and raising their readiness to receive sports competitions in the best conditions.
The rehabilitation project of the May 8, 1945 complex is considered one of the most important sporting projects expected in the state of Setif, given the status occupied by this historic sporting edifice, which has hosted many national and international competitions over the decades. It is expected that the ongoing works will give it a new look befitting its history and its place in the Algerian sporting arena.
It should be noted that the country’s higher authorities announced months ago the lifting of the freeze on the process of completing the study on the new Olympic stadium project in Setif with a capacity of 50,000 spectators, whose value is estimated at 125 billion centimes, and it is a project that the fans of ES Setif hope will see the light soon after long years of waiting.
