As Lake Balaton’s water level continues to drop, the sandbar known as “Monkey Island” has reappeared near Balatonfenyves, on the southern shore, Index reported.
Lake Balaton’s water level has been dropping by centimeters day by day, therefore beachgoers may have noticed the sandbar—known to many simply as “Monkey Island”—reappearing near Balatonfenyves in recent days.
Based on a report by the Somogy County news portal, the lake’s average water level is currently 83 centimeters. Agricultural expert István Tóth says that
at least 100–150 millimeters of water is missing from Lake Balaton, and due to the drought, no significant inflow is coming from the southern watershed.
The expert recalled that 15 years ago, there was a time when people had to walk at least 40–50 meters on a boardwalk dug deep into the mud at Fonyódliget (on the southern shore of Lake Balaton), as the water shortage was that severe. He also noted that it remains to be seen how much vacationers will care if they have to walk a long way from the shore to the water.
