Xiaomi 17T Pro under test: is it still possible to have a top of the range sub 1000 euros? | Review

In recent years, the mobile phone industry has accustomed us to developments that are as predictable as the fiscal calendar. Brands release annual updates in drops, change the layout of the cameras, slightly tune the processors and promise revolutions that, almost always, are just cosmetic touches and modest performance gains. Therefore, when Xiaomi decides to skip two generations and bring forward the calendar to launch the 17 series, curiosity is inevitable.

It’s worth starting by clarifying that the 17T Pro is not the Chinese brand’s new absolute top of the range. This place remains reserved for 17 Ultra. In Xiaomi’s nomenclature, the letter T identifies a family of equipment designed for the medium-high segment: cell phones that seek to get closer to the experience of more expensive models, but with a price that is less difficult to justify. It was like that with the 15T series and it’s like that again now. In addition to the 17T Pro, there is also a 17T, more affordable and, naturally, with some technical compromises compared to the Pro version.

    It was more accessible

But “rational price” no longer means low price. Inflation also reached technology — and in a particularly visible way to components, such as chips of memory. The Xiaomi 17T Pro has a recommended price of 999.99 euros in the base version, rising to 1099.99 euros in the 1TB configuration. These are values that, just a few years ago, unequivocally identified a top of the range. Today, with the most ambitious models approaching 2000 euros, they occupy an intermediate zone that is difficult to classify: too expensive to be popular, but still below the stratosphere. During the launch, Xiaomistore is running a promotion that lowers the price by 100 euros.

When removing the equipment from the box, the first thing to be noted is the weight. At 219 grams and 8.3 millimeters thick, this is not a cell phone designed to disappear into a shirt pocket. Still, the design helps to disguise part of this presence. Xiaomi used an aluminum chassis with brushed sides and a reinforced fiberglass back, which resists fingerprints surprisingly well. Available in blue, violet and black, the general shape is close to the straight lines that Apple popularized and which, in the meantime, have become almost a common grammar of the industry.

At the front, the flat screen extends almost to the edges thanks to LIPO encapsulation technology, which reduces the bezels to just 1.29 millimeters. The result is a convincing feeling of immersion, reinforced by the pre-applied film, the protective cover included in the box and the IP68 certification against water and dust. These are details that do not transform the equipment, but make the initial experience more complete.

The 6.83-inch AMOLED screen is one of the big selling points of the 17T Pro. The 144Hz refresh rate guarantees fluidity in menus, games and navigation, while the peak brightness of 3500 nits allows you to read a PÚBLICO article on a terrace, under the midday sun, without squinting your eyes or looking for shade in a hurry.

    Read in bed in comfort

But the detail that pleased me most is at the opposite end of the luminosity scale. The Xiaomi Vision Care system allows the screen to drop down to 1 nit of minimum brightness. Anyone who has the habit of reading news, reports or messages in the dim light of their bedroom, before falling asleep, knows how aggressive the minimum brightness of many screens can be. This capability, validated by eye protection certifications from TÜV Rheinland, is a good example of engineering applied to everyday comfort, not just spec sheet exuberance.

There is, however, a downside that the technical sheet tends to disguise. The panel does not use LTPO technology. Unlike some direct competitors, capable of lowering the refresh rate to 1Hz when the static image no longer warrants it, the 17T Pro only goes down to 30Hz. It’s not a dramatic flaw, but it prevents even finer energy optimization — especially in equipment that makes autonomy one of its flags.

The device’s engine is the MediaTek Dimensity 9500, a three-nanometer processor that responds without hesitation to any task. The idea that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are the natural choice for true top-of-the-range chips continues to exist in the minds of many consumers. But this border is increasingly blurred. In our tests, the performance of the 17T Pro was close to that of much more expensive models, such as the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the Galaxy S26 Ultra or the Find X9 Ultra.

In practice, this means that editing a heavy video, switching between dozens of documents, opening demanding applications or playing games for prolonged periods does not cause noticeable hiccups. The 3D IceLoop cooling system also does its job, keeping the phone comfortable in your hand even when the processor is called upon to work continuously.

THE software is HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. The interface assumes, without much effort of disguise, some aesthetic inspiration in the Cupertino universe, including a dynamic notification zone around the front camera. But the real surprise is not in the visual aspect. It’s a discreet and very useful feature: the possibility of sharing files and synchronizing data directly with Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.

For those who work in a mixed technology environment — Android in your pocket, Mac on your desk, iPad in your backpack — this bridge between rival ecosystems has real value. This is a feature that solves small daily frictions and can weigh more in the purchasing decision than many technical features.

    apps in excess

Xiaomi promises five years of system updates and six years of security updates, which gives some peace of mind to anyone looking at this phone as a medium-term investment. Less acceptable is that equipment of this price continues to arrive with pre-installed games and applications that the user will have to delete manually. On a thousand-euro cell phone, the bloatware It should no longer be treated as a fatality.

The 7000 mAh silicon-carbon battery is, without a doubt, one of the most differentiating elements of the 17T Pro. It represents a growth of 27% compared to the previous model and is the largest battery used by Xiaomi in smartphones sold outside of China. In everyday use, this ability translates into a rare sensation: being able to forget your charger during the weekend.

Even with intense use — maps, photography, constant navigation, messages, videos and some work — the 17T Pro easily exceeds 36 hours of autonomy. For a moderate user, the full two days is a realistic goal. And when the battery finally starts to give out, 100W HyperCharge charging recovers virtually all of the power in about 20 minutes, although the charger is not provided. There is also 50-watt wireless charging, a convenience that remains absent in many models positioned in this price range.

The ultra-wide angle is not up to par with other cameras. The sharpness is poor, especially in the corners of the images
    DR

As a launch bonus, Xiaomi includes a three-month Google AI Pro subscription, with 5TB of cloud storage, and access to YouTube Premium. It’s an interesting extra, although hardly decisive for anyone considering the purchase of equipment of this value.

In photography, the partnership with Leica continues to be one of the pillars of the experience. The color processing is natural, without the exaggerations of saturation that continue to dominate a large part of the market. Images have contrast, presence and character and rarely look artificial.

The main new feature is the introduction of a 5x periscopic telephoto lens, with 50 megapixels and optical stabilization. It is the most interesting lens in the set and proves to be particularly effective in portraits, achieving convincing background blur, good sharpness and perspective compression that favors faces and details. The ability to focus at just 30 centimeters also opens up space for macro photography, with more creative results than would be usual with a lens of this type.

The “Leica Live Moment” function allows you to capture the moments immediately before the shot, making it easier to choose the right expression in a group photo or in a fast-moving moment. In video, 4K cinematic recording at 60 frames per second, with background blur, works with acceptable precision, supported by the “Stage” mode, designed to manage difficult lighting in concerts, night shows or high contrast environments. Stabilization is efficient and the ability to progressively adapt to large changes in ambient light is impressive.

The disappointment is in the 12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. A sensor clearly inferior to the others, which clearly loses quality in nighttime environments. Images show less detail, more noise and a visible drop in sharpness at the edges. On a cell phone that costs around a thousand euros, this difference in quality between rear cameras is difficult to accept. Versatility exists, but not with the consistency that the price demands.

    Verdict

The Xiaomi 17T Pro stands out as a solid choice for those who put autonomy at the top of their priorities, but don’t want to give up top-notch performance, an excellent screen and a versatile camera system. It’s not top of the range on paper — that territory remains reserved for Ultra models — but it comes very close to that experience in everyday use.

The problem is in the price. The 999.99 euros for the base version make the idea of an “affordable top of the range” moot and force the buyer to accept some compromises: an outdated ultra-wide-angle camera, the absence of LTPO on the screen, some weight in the hand and pre-installed applications that should no longer appear on a device in this category.

Professionals, travelers and intensive users who spend long periods away from electrical outlets, value long-range optical zoom for portrait and need to frequently switch between Android, macOS and iOS should consider purchasing this model. The bridge to the Apple ecosystem is one of the most useful surprises of the device and could make a difference for those who live between platforms.

On the contrary, users who prefer compact, lightweight and easy-to-use phones with one hand should ignore it, as well as landscape photography aficionados who depend on a high-quality ultra-wide angle. Those who bought last year’s model will also find few truly disruptive reasons here to justify an immediate exchange.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro doesn’t change the rules of the market. But remember that, even below the psychological barrier of 1000 euros, it is still possible to find a cell phone with top-notch ambition — as long as you accept that, in this new normality, “affordable” is no longer exactly what it used to be.
