Andorra has registered more than 1,600 umbilical cord blood donations since 2012a number that has allowed it to be carried out seven transplants. The data was made known this Friday during the symposium “Donation as part of our life. An interdisciplinary look at donation”, organized by Ministry of Health and the Andorran Health Care Service (SAAS).
During the opening of the day, the Secretary of State for Health, Cristina Pérezhas remarked that donation is one of the priority axes of health policies. In this sense, he has announced that the ministry is working with SAAS to define the necessary strategy for the donation to be fully integrated within the Andorran health system and be recognized as a key element of healthcare quality.
The data presented show a growing participation of citizens. Only during 2025, 22.7% of births registered in the country have resulted in a donation of umbilical cord blood and, of these, near the 70% have been allocated to the public donation. Regarding the donation of bone marrowthe program started in 2021 already has more than 700 people registeredhas allowed to do five confirmatory typings and an effective donation with receiver.
The cornea donation also continues to consolidate. Since the launch of the program on May 15, 2025, they have registered 20 effective donors and 16 viable corneas were obtained. Pérez has assured that these figures demonstrate “a society that trusts, participates and understands donation as an essential part of its health system”.
The day also served to highlight the Document of Advance Wills (DVA), a tool that allows health preferences to be recorded in the event of not being able to express them in the future. Currently, the National Register of Advance Wills accumulates 932 requests, of which 546 correspond to women and 386 to men.
