Oman marks Environment Day with stronger climate and green push

Muscat: As global attention turns to climate action and environmental sustainability, the Sultanate of Oman is intensifying efforts to strengthen conservation, expand green cover and advance its carbon neutrality ambitions, reinforcing its position as a regional leader in environmental stewardship.

Marking a renewed push towards sustainability, Oman continues to align national policies with the objectives of ‘Oman Vision 2040’, focusing on biodiversity protection, air and water quality, waste management, climate adaptation and the preservation of natural ecosystems.

Speaking to ONA, Dr Mohammed bin Saif al Kalbani, Director-General of Environmental Compliance at the Environment Authority, said this year’s environmental focus places climate change and adaptation at the forefront, amidst growing global concerns over rising environmental challenges.

He highlighted Oman’s growing environmental footprint, including the country’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, alongside investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen, sustainable transport and environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Among the major initiatives shaping Oman’s environmental future is the ambitious drive to plant millions of trees, including the recently launched ‘Plant Oman 2050’ initiative, aimed at significantly expanding green spaces and enhancing food and environmental security.

The Environment Authority has also intensified conservation efforts through the expansion of protected areas, mangrove restoration under the Blue Carbon project and continued protection of coral reefs, sea turtles and native Ghaf trees.

Dr Al Kalbani noted that Oman has strengthened environmental monitoring systems across all governorates, including air quality networks, marine pollution tracking and soil and water monitoring, contributing to notable improvements in international environmental rankings.

As part of its broader sustainability agenda, Oman will officially launch the ‘Environmental Atlas’ on Sunday, a major digital initiative designed to provide comprehensive environmental data, maps and planning tools to support sustainable development and informed policymaking.
