Robert Amsterdam, a member of Samvel Karapetyan’s international legal team, says:
“Following the course of today’s large-scale arrests in Armenia, seeing how people are labeled on the basis of some “recordings”, I inadvertently draw parallels with the darkest period in history, the Stalinist period.
At that time, people were declared “guilty” even before they were brought to court. it was simply necessary to create an atmosphere of widespread fear.
But let’s understand what is actually hidden behind all this. Nothing has been proven yet, there is still no legal verdict of the court, but people are already being targeted, their names are being publicized in the news, trying to break the will of the “Strong Armenia” party members and their supporters.
This is a classic example of repression, when the law is used for political purposes.
My years of experience suggest that when the state starts acting with such haste and demonstrative harshness, it means that the real goal is not justice, but to silence the political opponent at any cost.”
