There are places in Serbia where the pace of life changes completely as soon as you get out of the car. Where no one is in a hurry, where coffee is drunk for a long time, lunch lasts for hours, and the day passes between vineyards, old facades and views of the Danube. That’s exactly how they are Sremski Karlovci — a small town in Vojvodina that many call more and more often “little Tuscany”.
Less than an hour’s drive from Belgrade hides a place that is more reminiscent of the north of Italy than a typical weekend trip in Serbia. Baroque architecture, narrow quiet streets, wine cellars, hills full of vineyards and a slower pace of life give Karlovci an atmosphere that makes people come here to get away from the noise, and not for a classic tourist tour.
A small town made for slow weekends
Unlike destinations that have become overcrowded in recent years, Sremski Karlovci still has that old, calm atmosphere of a Vojvodina town. Here, the day can be spent in a leisurely stroll without a particular plan — from the central square and the old gymnasium to the viewpoints and wine cellars hidden among the houses.
The most beautiful part of Karlovac is actually the feeling that you don’t have to reach anything. Many come only for lunch and a glass of wine, then stay until evening.
Wine, Bermet and Vojvodina flavor
The people of Karlovci have a long wine tradition, and Bermet is one of the drinks for which they are known outside of Serbia. Sweet aromatic wine was once served in European courts, and today it is an indispensable part of almost every visit to this place.
A special experience are small family wineries and cellars where tastings are more like socializing than a tourist tour. With homemade cheeses, fish or Vojvodina specialties, it’s easy to lose track of time.
They are the most beautiful outside of the main season
Although they are popular during spring and autumn, the real charm of Karlovac can be seen on weekdays or outside the main tourist crowd. Then the city seems almost cinematic — empty streets, open windows of old houses, church bells and the smell of linden trees in summer.
Many compare them to smaller Italian towns precisely because of that combination of architecture, wine and slow life. And the biggest advantage is that you don’t need a plane or a passport for that feeling.
Ideal for a one-day escape from the city
One of the reasons why Sremski Karlovci has become a favorite among people looking for quieter trips is the proximity to Belgrade. They’re close enough for a spontaneous one-day getaway, but different enough to make you feel like you’ve stepped out of everyday life for a little while.
And perhaps this is precisely the reason why many today call them “Serbia’s little Tuscany”.
